Michael Wood (Winemaker)

Te Rere’s winemaker, Michael Wood developed his love for Waiheke and its unique grape-growing environment while working for Passage Rock Wines and Obsidian Wines.  Working with Syrah is Michael's passion and he is delighted with the potential demonstrated by the Te Rere wines.

“Te Rere with its sheltered North West slopes and proximity to the ocean exemplify Waiheke viticulture and provide an opportunity to craft unique wines that reflect this beautiful property”.

Michael gained his wine industry training in Blenheim where he completed his diploma in Viticulture and Wine Production in 2000.  Michael has worked abroad for Domaine Courbis in France’s Northern Rhone Valley,  Weingut Heitlinger in Baden, Germany and as an Assistant Winemaker for Simon Gilbert Wine Services in Mudgee, NSW.

In 2017, Michael won the prestigious title of New Zealand Winemaker of the Year at the NZ Aromatic Wine Show after showcasing three wines, the Obsidian Reserve Syrah 2015, The Mayor 2013, and The Obsidian 2015.

Matt Sloan (VITICULTURIST)

Matt manages the vineyard in conjunction with Michael Wood. The two combine superbly. Matt has a background in chemistry and completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in Chemistry and Bio Chemistry. However, his love of wine sent him back to study to complete a Post Graduate Diploma in Viticulture and Oenology at Lincoln University. Matt replies that his beliefs are quite simple when asked about his philosophy.

Vine balance is key. Concentration of flavour and balanced tannin come to life when the vine, soil and local environment are in equilibrium. The use of viticulture tools helps us achieve this balance.”
